Info about Asbestos Exposure

Manufacturers have used asbestos for decades. Brake manufacturers still
occasionally use asbestos pads, and many old homes contain asbestos in
the insulation. The dangers of the fire resistant product have been
known since Roman times. The Romans managed to weave the fabric into
fibers and knew of its resistance to fire. Even the Ancient Romans knew
of the dangers, and they called asbestos cancer ``the disease of
slaves.''

Firefighters, miners, steel workers, and people who worked in shipyards
have higher rates of mesothelioma and other forms of asbestos related
cancers than the rest of the population. Fibers left on work clothes
could also cause loved ones to develop the disease. Symptoms of
mesothelioma may not develop until several decades after exposure. Many
areas of the United States have small amounts of asbestos that occur
naturally in the soil.

The United States is the last developed country on Earth to allow the
use of asbestos. Use of the product declined in the 1970s after its
dangers became widely known. It was banned as a use as a building
material, but attempts to impose an all-out ban on asbestos have not yet
succeeded. The EPA tried to issue a complete ban in 1981. Parts of the
ban were overturned by a supreme court decision two years later.

Patty Murray, a senator from Washington introduced a new bill to the
congress in 2002. The bill simply reinstated many parts of the original
ban. Congressional committees killed the bill. Murray decided to
introduce the Ban Asbestos in America Act in 2007. The act passed a
congressional committee.

Although the use of asbestos for certain products is still legal in the
United States, products containing the fire proof substance are slowly
being removed from production. The requirement to stop making products
with the product known to causes  asbestosis ,
mesothelioma and other forms of cancer is part of the  asbestos legistlation , speciafically,  the Clean Air
and Toxic Substances Act.
